The Luck of the Irish

Friday night, my hand digs through the bowl of unsuspecting pizza victims. My fingers, they rummage through pieces of paper. I am hopeful the choice redeems last weeks debacle. I pull out a name. My mind flashes.

"Mamma Mia." I announce to the now crowd of family members (my wife and cousin).

Their faces show curiosity. I Google search real quick.

"Well, apparently it is in the mall."

Their faces unmoved. Nobody seems excited about this one.

"Hey, it's like Sbarro." I say trying to convince both myself and them.

The next day my wife and I take our daughter to the zoo. We figure we could jaunt on over to the mall to attempt a slice from the mall life (I had the title for this one in my head as soon as I drew the name). I sat in the back and kept my daughter awake after our busy morning. I do this by reminding her that pizza is upon us.

"Pizza Pizza!" She sounds like the Little Caesars cave man guy.

The food court has no pizza, but a sign where this place used to be.
So, on to the second name.

Patty's Pub.

This one I am more excited about. I have heard good things from my wife and she's never wrong (make sure she knows I wrote that).

Patty's Pub is an Irish-themed bar with food. The food itself sounded pretty good when I inspected the menu. Sandwiches and Pizza, two of my favorite. The palate loves them, the body has a harder time.

I have never eaten here, nor would have ever considered it prior to this "ADVENTURE," as our family yells to the next pizza place.

Football has started here in Nebraska and therefore I am concerned about the availability of a bar being able to make an order out pizza. I decide to order two hours in advance of when we plan on eating.

After much debate between my wife, my two cousins, and me, we decide through the array of specialty pies available to go with the Western and the Hawaiian. Both have meats which is good and only one, the Western, is made without marinara (almost a discounting factor in this pizza journey).

The bar was busy when we picked them up and my pizza box felt moist at the bottom. This, like the pizza had the opportunity to sit there a while. A little concern set in.

Once home I open the medium sized boxes to take my picture and we dig in. I hadn't eaten in a few hours, so it was difficult for me to hold back. I grab the Western first, bit before thinking. Wow.

I'll get to that in a bit.

The second slice, The Hawaiian. Not a fan of the obscure, for which this pizza counts for me, but hot damn! This pizza has Canadian bacon, pineapple, cream cheese, and a slight touch of marinara that mixed in great with all the other ingredients.

The pizzas were both cut how I like, cheese was good, sauce was great and in adequate amounts, the meat was authentic and not perfect little cubes. The crust had a good flavor and density for I almost ate the bare part of the crust, something I had only done with a buttery pan pizza in the past. Even the cheese bread and extra marinara were divine.

Now, back to "The Western."

This baby had brisket, bacon, and BBQ sauce versus marinara. These intense flavors and textures brought me back to my childhood BBQ HotPockets. Now, this may not initially sound appeasing, but the overall flavor and mixture with the denser crust was not only an unexpected surprise, but made for a satisfying pizza. I feared The Western wouldn't count because it wasn't traditional. This pie blew the lid off of that bias and has moved up the list to one of my favorite pizzas in Lincoln, Ne.

Overall rating for Pattys Pub is Awesome. I am excited to try some different specialty pies some day. The pies were a bit pricey and we did have to travel a little further from where I live to make this anything semi-regular, however the pizza was worth it. Also, the lady who took my order, Jen I think, was very nice and said "I had the western for lunch." Nice touch.

For all the factors that make a pizza great, this place had them. Nice Work Patty's Pub.

(Disclaimer: I heard that a large may be cut into squares, for we only ordered mediums, just saying. )
